A Lifetime of Teaching and Singing
Deirdre Welborn is a tenured Associate Professor of Music at The South Carolina School of the Arts at Anderson University. She has served on the faculty since 1996. She teaches applied voice in all majors including Vocal Performance, Worship, Commercial Music, and Musical Theater majors. She also teaches Vocal Pedagogy. Welborn’s voice students from both her private and collegiate studio, have consistently earned honors at the state, regional and national level at the National Association of Teachers of Singing Auditions (NATS) in classical, music theater, and commercial music categories. She is an active member NATS since 1993, and has served as President, Vice-President, and District Governor of the SC Chapter.
With a deep commitment to vocal health, she views her work as a mission—serving performers and music educators by helping them discover their authentic voice and protect it for a lifetime. Her goal is to guide each singer toward healthy vocal practices that prevent injury, build confidence, and support expressive freedom.
Equally devoted to musicians’ overall well-being, she uses the principles of Body Mapping to help musicians move with ease and efficiency, to “empower musicians to make healthy movement choices that promote artistic freedom in their music making.” She is a Licensed Body Mapping Educator through the Association for Body Mapping Education (ABME). In this spirit, she designed a Musicians' Wellness course at Anderson University, with Body Mapping as the foundation for the course..
She received the Associate of Fine Arts degree in Music from Anderson College, the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Furman University, and the Master of Music degree from Westminster Choir College.
When she is not singing or talking about vocal pedagogy, she enjoys traveling, gardening, weight-lifting, and spending time with her family and her beloved dog, Melody.
My passion for teaching voice began early—I led my first children’s choir at 18 and taught my first private lesson at 21. For over 45 years, I’ve been dedicated to helping singers find and develop their unique voices.
For the past 30 years, I’ve taught voice in higher education while running a thriving private studio, working with students of all ages, styles, and experience levels.
Whether I’m working with a school choir, a musical theater cast, a worship team, a church choir, a group of mature adult singers, or mentoring music educators and worship leaders—teaching voice is truly at the heart of all I do. I feel blessed to do what I do!
It is a joy to be a part of each vocal journey - to help each singer discover, develop and maintain their unique voice, empowering them to freely create the sounds they want to create while expressing both their emotions and the music with confidence and ease.
As a soprano, I perform in a wide range of styles—from classical and musical theater to jazz, worship, and commercial music. This versatility shapes my teaching. Because I actively sing across genres, I understand the unique technical and stylistic demands of each.
Whether it’s classical phrasing, musical theater belt, or the expressive freedom of worship and CCM, I help students develop healthy, authentic technique that supports the style they love. My goal is to empower each singer to perform with confidence, versatility, and artistic integrity.
